With the NRF’s BIG Show 2019 taking place in New York over the next week, we pay tribute to the most interesting and disruptive new retail concepts in the Big Apple.

DTC clean beauty brand Beautycounter’s first permanent store combines its conscientious business approach with experiential retail. More than just a space to sell products, it is a place to educate its community and promote its lobbying efforts to change beauty industry regulations.

Gucci Wooster Bookstore

Gucci has opened a bookstore in New York filled with books that have influenced its designs. More than 2,000 titles about fashion, art, design, culture, illustration and photography have been curated in collaboration with Dashwood Books. Visitors can browse books while sitting in leather sofas and chairs, or they can purchase them.

Glossier New York

Glossier’s New York flagship, situated on the site of its original HQ, is said to be “the ultimate physical expression of the brand”. The space is viewed as a space for staff, known as Offline Editors, to create content to engage and educate its legion of online fans.

The Drug Store by Dirty Lemon

The Drug Store is the physical retail debut from popular online health beverage brand Dirty Lemon. The innovative space has no staff, or checkouts, just three fridges full of the brand’s premium drinks. Customers can walk in, grab a drink and leave without paying, with the brand trusting them to “pay by text”, as instructed on digital signage in-store.

Claus Porto

Heritage Portuguese soap brand Claus Porto has opened its first international boutique in Manhattan’s Nolita district. The small minimalist space pays homage to the architecture and craftsmanship of Portugal, as well as Claus Porto’s art-deco packaging and 131-year-old brand story.

Camp is an experiential toy store concept that places more emphasis on experience than purchase. The 10,000 sq ft store is arranged like a campsite and customers can pay to take part in popular camping-related activities. The theme of the store will be refreshed every two to three months.

Nike House of Innovation 000

Nike’s recently-opened New York flagship is a six-storey best-of compilation of the brand’s most innovative global retail concepts. It includes the Nike Speed Shop, an entire floor that uses local data to stock its shelves, expert assistance at The Sneaker Bar, and seamless integration between online and offline shopping. The Phluid Project

The Phluid Project in New York’s NoHo positions itself as the world’s first gender-neutral store. The 3,000 sq ft store is part retail, part experiential platform, part community space, aimed to empower gender-nonconforming and genderfluid consumers.

At French fashion brand Ba&sh’s Nolita boutique customers can borrow clothes for the weekend, free of charge. Events are also hosted in-store each month encouraging customers to view the brand as a trusted friend. These include reduced-price French classes, complimentary French breakfasts, and expert panel discussions.

10 Corso Como

Celebrated Milanese retail destination 10 Corso Como opened its first US store in late 2018. The 28,000 square foot space sells clothing, design objects and books displayed amongst artwork and installations. It includes an Italian cafe, an art and photography gallery and a stylish private garden for visitors.
